Students entering high school and their parents still may have questions before Stamford's first day of school Thursday. The orientation for ninth-graders on Wednesday should help. But Stamford High School also has prepared online information, available now, for new and returning students. The following are a few highlights.
This may seem as simple as A-B-C, but students are reminded to bring basic learning tools on the first day. These include pen and pencil, notebook and a lunch or lunch money. Oh, and come prepared to learn, the school reminds students.
Determination to make the grade will have fringe benefits, especially if a student is interested in sports. Every freshman is eligible, but after the first quarter a 2.0 GPA is required to play sports at SHS.
For students who prefer to run for office rather than down a football field or basketball court, freshman class elections at SHS take place in October. The offices of class president, vice president, secretary and treasurer will be open. Candidates will be allowed to display fliers and posters in designated school areas, and each will make a speech before a freshmen class assembly. Voting will take place the day speeches are made. For sophomores, juniors and seniors, the political whirl occurred last spring, so students in those classes already have officers.
SHS also stresses that the school's parent/teacher organization, Friends of Stamford High, known as FOSH, welcomes active participation. The first meeting of the school year, on Back to School Night, usually is held in early September. Any parent with a student attending SHS is a member of FOSH. Its activities include publishing the parent newsletter and the school calendar, and helping fund projects such as graduating-senior scholarships, among others.
