Funeral services for Peter Veronis, a longtime Stamford resident who had an accomplished career in publishing and was a multiple Bronze Star recipient, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 25 at Archangels Greek Orthodox Church, 1527 Bedford St., Stamford, at 11 a.m. Viewing will begin a half hour prior to the service.
Veronis died Friday at age 87. Leading entities such as American Express and Reader's Digest depended on Veronis for his advertising expertise. He served as a consultant after establishing a career in advertising and publishing. He was a vice president/advertising director of Psychology Today Magazine and the Saturday Review, and also was an executive in advertising sales at Look Magazine and Ridder Johns Co.
He was a founder of Book Digest Magazine, which was established in 1973, and served as its publisher. He also launched the CBS Magazine Advertising Network. Veronis began his advertising career working for the Massachusetts-based Springfield Newspapers while attending Columbia University from 1951 to 1954. Prior to that, Veronis served in the military for 10 years after enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1941. Over that period he became the youngest person at the time to attain the rank of chief petty officer.
A participant in primary World War II battles in the Pacific, Veronis served on the battleships USS North Carolina, USS Whitley and USS Harkness. He received 11 Bronze Stars for service to his country during the war. American Defense Service and Fleet Clasp, American Area Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign and Philippine Liberation honors also are among his earned medals.
Veronis was called to service for the Korean War, performing his duties with distinction during that conflict as well. He was honorably discharged. Veronis was proud of his country, his Greek heritage and his family. He is predeceased by wife Dorothy (Babs) White, who died in 2004 and to whom he was married for 57 years. He leaves daughter Judith Anne Rodgers and son-in-law Philip N. Rodgers of Wilton; sister Mary Thompson and brothers George (Kim), John (Lauren) and Alexander (Pearl) Veronis; step-grandchildren Suellen Rodgers and Dina Weitz (Robert); and a host of nieces and nephews.
