STAMFORD, Conn. Members of the Stamford Yacht Club will have to pay $75 for each boat moored in Stamford Harbor after the citys Board of Representatives voted to establish the fee at its meeting Monday night.
The Harbor Commission reached out to the representatives after members of the Stamford Yacht Club fought paying for the city moorings because they believed they should have been considered commercially owned boats rather than individually owned boats. Before Mondays vote, there were no commercial fees.
The corporation counsel confirmed the yacht clubs stance, which led the board to reopen the issue in July.
In May 2010, the board changed the fee to $75 for individual, private moorings and moorings used by nonprofit organizations under the belief that the fee was established for all moorings. The Stamford Harbor Commission reached out again to the board in July to approve the $50 fee for a mooring in the commercial field and a $100 fee for an individual mooring permit.
The $50 fee was changed to $75 after members felt it was unfair for the organizations to pay less than individuals.
Thats not fair, thats not fair, thats bologna, city Rep. Joseph Coppola Jr. said, supporting the higher fee rate.
The case was made that the yacht club services and maintains the moors, which makes it easier for the harbor commission. But city Rep. Patrick White said individuals share those responsibilities as well. Currently, the yacht club is the only commercial organization to have a mooring field in Stamford Harbor.
