Xtreme Cheerleaders Crown 4 Champs in New Haven

Four teams from Xtreme Cheerleading of Norwalk won first place Sunday in the Xtreme Spirit Elite International Championships in New Haven.

The Shimmer, which won a national competition in Florida last month, won as did the Shine, Dazzle and Blaze. The coed Blaze and the Shine, a group of teenage girls, won Grand Champion honors.

The Shimmer battled back from adversity to become Grand Champions. Early in the routine, one of the "flyers" – a girl who is supported by teammates – fell and suffered a back injury. "They were upset, they felt like the routine was over,'' coach Dana Talbot said. Anthony Munoz, who was watching the routine, ran in to take the place of the injured cheerleader.

Talbot and her husband, Mike, raced back to attend to the fallen cheerleader. Within moments, she returned to her team to finish the routine. "They finished it beautifully, and they finished it with heart and soul,'' Dana said. "It was a heartfelt moment and the girls did an amazing job. They were shocked when they won first place."
