Runners Set for Conference Championships

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Fairfield County track and field athletes will head to New Haven on Thursday to compete in the league championships at Hillhouse High School.

The Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships begin at 4:30 p.m. Danbury is the defending champion in the boys and girls divisions.

Both titles could change hands. In boys, Staples defeated Danbury to win the Western Division championships last weekend. Led by three victories by junior distance runner Henry Wynne, Staples outdistanced the Hatters by 53.5 points.

For girls, Danbury won the league’s West Division but could get a challenge from Central Division champion Ridgefield and East Division winner Darien. The Blue Wave won the division crown by more than 80 points.

Among the athletes to watch is Wynne, who owns the top times in the state in the 1,600. Staples also has the fastest time in the state in three boys relays: the 4 x 400, 4 x 800 and sprint medley.

Greenwich’s Ryan Kelly owns the fastest state time in the 400, and the Cardinals have the fastest 4 x 200 relay in the state. On the girls side, Staples' pole vaulter Lexie Schachne owns the state’s top leap at 11 feet, 6 inches. Brien McMahon’s Shelly Lindo has run 7.35 in the 55, the second fastest time in the state and a school record. Greenwich sisters Abigail and Elizabeth Markowitz are the top seeds in three events, and the Cardinals are the top seed in three relays.
