Piazza Gets a Kick Out Mother's Day Win

Liz Herbert didn't see Sarah Piazza until it was too late. Piazza, of New Haven, shot past Herbert in the final stage of the Mother's Day 10-kilometer run Sunday at Norwalk's Calf Pasture Beach. Piazza was time in 41:45, followed by Herbert in 42:02. Amy Fredericks was third in 42:06.

"I didn't have a kick today,'' said Herbert, of Darien. "I was ahead and Amy was behind me the whole time." That was until Piazza came charging down the stretch to steal the victory. Piazza, who moved to New Haven last year, said it was only her second time participating in a community run.

Piazza moved from Oregon, where she ran with running clubs. She recently ran the Danbury Half Marathon and said she had difficulty finding her rhythm. "I think I ran as well as I could," Piazza said. "After running the half marathon, it was hard to adjust my pace."

She saved her best for last as she overtook Herbert in the final stages. "I finished second last year, too,'' Herbert said. "I think it's a trend."
