Norwalk, Southport Host Road Races Sunday

Runners have their choice of events in Norwalk and Southport this weekend while triathletes from the area get one final competition in Westchester County.

The Bigelow Tea Community Challenge steps off Sunday at 10 a.m. from the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Southport. The Run Between the Libraries 5K begins Sunday at 9 a.m. at Union Park in Norwalk, and the Westchester Triathlon begins at 7 a.m. in Rye, N.Y.

The Bigelow race includes a 2-mile walk and a fun run for the kids. Norwalk's Amy Fredericks won the women's race last year, while Justin McGregor won the men's race. Now in its 24th year, the race has been especially popular for runners from Fairfield and Westport. Last year's race had 548 finishers.

The Norwalk race also includes a kids race (50 yards), live music and health and wellness activities. The races goes through Mathews Park and to the South Norwalk Branch Library. It then returns to Union Park, near the Norwalk Public Library on Mott Avenue. Proceeds go toward increasing family programs at the library. Matthew Ross of Stamford and Liz Herbert of Darien won the men's and women's divisions, respectively, last year. There were 168 finishers last year, a solid number for a first-year event.

The Westchester Triathlon is an Olympic distance event and begins at Rye Playland. The race attracts more than 1,000 competitors, many from Fairfield County. There is also a kids race for children ages 7 to 14 and a Meek and Mighty Race for 15-and-over. The Kids and Meek and Mighty races will be held Saturday.
