Mossman Triathlon Features Full Field

The waters and streets of East Norwalk will be filled with more than 600 athletes swimming, biking and running Sunday at the Mossman Sprint Triathlon. Race director Robin Myers believes many more would have liked to join in the fun.

"We could probably get about 1,200, but we had to limit the number we can put out on the course,'' Myers said. "We want to keep athletes as safe as possible." Registration for the sold-out event closed last week.

Sunday's race begins at 6:30 a.m. when the triathletes jump into the water for a half-mile swim. They transition to bikes for a 12.5 mile ride and finish with a 3.1 mile run. There is also a triathlon for children ages 7-14 on Saturday. Children ages 7-10 swim 75 yards, ride two miles and run a half mile. Children ages 11-14 swim 150 yards, ride for four miles and run for one mile. That event is also sold out.

"I'm not surprised at all,'' Myers said. "Triathlons have really grown in popularity. People are no longer just training for one discipline. They're not just running or biking or swimming. It's putting yourself against the elements and there's good camaraderie among the athletes."

This year's event is part of the USA Triathlon New England Junior Development Series. Some of the top athletes from the region will be competing. The race begins and ends at Calf Pasture Beach. The bike and run courses are a two-loop layouts that are mostly flat and marshaled by volunteers and police. Find out more about the race on the Team Mossman website.
