Iannazzo Shelled in Pitt Loss to UConn

Pitt lefthander Matt Iannazzo of Norwalk was working on an outstanding season going into Saturday’s showdown against UConn. Unfortunately for the junior, the Huskies put the brakes, at least temporarily, on Iannazzo’s strong campaign.

The Huskies defeated Pitt, 9-2, as Iannazzo was tagged for 11 hits and seven runs (six earned) in six innings. UConn won its second straight game over the Panthers to improve to 10-9-1, 2-0 in the Big East. Pitt is 12-8, 0-2.

Iannazzo (2-2) came into the game with a 0.99 ERA, having allowed just three earned runs in his four previous starts. His ERA rose to 2.43, and he has 25 strikeouts compared to just nine walks. He has pitched one complete game.

Last year, Iannazzo went 11-2 with a 3.76 ERA on his way to second-team All-Big East honors.  The former Norwalk High star led the Bears to the FCIAC championship during his  junior season. He also played football and basketball for the Bears.
