Darien's Lacrosse Team Stops McMahon

Darien's lacrosse team is a perennial state power, one of the top programs in the nation and well on its way to another terrific season. "They are what we want to be,'' Brien McMahon coach Mike Epstein said after Thursday's 12-0 loss to the Blue Wave. "They are really good."

McMahon (1-3) has a young team with a strong class of underclassmen that should be able to compete against the top teams in a few years. The Senators did not have an answer for the Blue Wave Wednesday.

"We can't simulate the pressure that they put on you,'' Epstein said. "The only way you can feel that is by playing against them. We have to learn when we play against teams like Darien."

Alden Frelinghuysen had three goals to lead Darien (4-0), which has outscored opponents 56-5. Brian Gleason, Brian Annechino and Case Mathias had two apiece.

"Are we where we want to be?" Epstein asked. "Well, we'd rather be 3-1. We're getting better defensively and tonight we played better defense after the first quarter. We're a work in progress."
