FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Fairfield Preps Connor Rog finished second to lead a strong performance by area runners at the New England High School cross country championships Saturday at North Scituate, R.I.
Rog, a senior, ran 15:27 on the 5-kilometer course. He finished one second behind Mike Marsella, a senior from Chariho High School in Rhode Island.
Fairfield Wardes Harry Warnick finished fourth, while Staples Henry Wynne finished seventh. Preps boys finished second in team scoring, while Darien was ninth. In the girls race, Greenwichs Abby Markowitz finished 28th overall to help the Cardinals to an 11th place finish.
Warnick ran 15:43, while Wynne ran 15:57. Dariens top runner was Michael Johnson, who finished 40th in 16:40. Preps top finishers, in addition to Rog, were Patrick Corona (27th), Christian Alvarado (35th), Michael Whelan (53rd, 16:45) and Scott Ball (175, 17:38). Bishop Hendrickson of Rhode Island won with 116 points, followed by Prep with 172.
Darien had a strong team finish as well, placing fourth among Connecticut schools. It beat 21 other teams in its first appearance at New Englands.
Joel Barlow's Logan Fulton also had a strong race, finishing 41st overall in 16:41.
Greenwich finished 11th with 353 points, just seven behind state champion Ridgefield. Sarah Fountain was 53rd for the Cardinals, and freshman Jennifer Goggin was 86th.
Staples Caroline Koenig also had a strong race, finishing 58th in 19:42.
