Fairfield's Julie Chu and the U.S. Women's National team won a third straight world championship Monday with a 3-2 overtime victory over Canada. The International Ice Hockey World Women's Championship was played in Zurich, Switzerland.
Hilary Knight scored the game-winning goal for Team USA, and goalie Jessie Vetter made 51 saves. Chu assisted on the game-winning goal. Her shot deflected to Knight, who scored at 7:48 of the overtime session.
Chu scored one goal and had six assists in five games for the U.S., which finished the tournament undefeated. Chu has played on seven U.S. teams that have played in the IHF World Championships and has won four gold medals. She is also a three-time Olympian, winning two silver medals and one bronze.
She played in college at Harvard University and in high school at Choate Rosemary Hall. She recently concluded her first year as an assistant coach with the Union College women's ice hockey team.
