Chris Murphy Makes First Senate Floor Speech On Newtown Shootings

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, in his first floor speech since taking office, talked on the topic of gun violence.

The Democratic senator from Connecticut took office less than a month after a gunman murdered 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. He was calling on the Senate to vote on gun control measures as he vilified the gun violence in the country.

“It’s happening every day. And this country has gotten so callously used to gun violence that it’s just raindrops. It’s just background noise,” he said.

He criticized the National Rifle Association's fight to stop more stringent gun control measures in the name of the Second Amendment.

“Liberty isn’t having any gun you want any time you want,” Murphy said. “What kind of liberty did those kids have when they were attacked by an assault weapon-wielding madman?”

After Murphy's speech, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., speaks about some of the family members of the Newtown victims who were visiting Congress to call for a vote on gun control measures.
