Walter Gerry, 90, WWII Veteran Formerly Of Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. – Former Norwalk resident Walter J. Gerry died Aug. 16 at his home in Trumbull. He was 90. 

Born Jan. 26, 1922, in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of Benjamin and Elsie Gerry. He graduated from New York University and served in the Army during World War II. Gerry worked in the financial and accounting departments of Burndy, Pfizer, National Starch, J.T. Baker Chemical Co. and Consolidated Packaging Corp.  

He later left the business world to enter the teaching profession. A longtime resident of Newtown, Conn., he then lived in Norwalk. Gerry taught accounting and business at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport for over 25 years, earning the rank of full professor. After retiring, he taught off-campus programs through Norwalk Community College.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Miriam Taishoff Gerry; three children, Alexandra (Randi), of Norwalk, Thomas, of Round Top, N.Y., and Patricia Gerry Campbell, of Newtown; a sister, Roberta Gerry, of New York City; a son-in-law, William Campbell; a daughter-in-law, Brenda D. Gerry; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Joshua Gerry.

A memorial service was held Sunday at the Green Funeral Home in Danbury.
