Take a Cruise on Norwalk Aquarium Research Vessel

NORWALK, Conn. – Want a closer look at the creatures that live in Long Island Sound? Norwalk’s Maritime Aquarium is starting Life Study Cruises this summer.

The aquarium’s cruises will go out Saturdays from May 5 to June 30, then daily during July and August at 1 p.m. The cruises will run 2 1/2 hours.

The research vessel Oceanic will collect marine life from different water levels and habitats of the Sound. At the end, the participants will check out the ship's trawl net to see the varieties of fish, crabs, lobsters, seastars and squid.

“Our best exhibits can’t top the immediacy and impact when study-cruise participants see these animals come up onto the boat right in front of them,” said Jamie Alonzo, the aquarium’s director of education.

Maritime Aquarium educators involve participants in the work of sorting through samples, helping to pull in the trawl net and returning animals to the water.

The cruise will cost $20.50 per person, $18.50 for Maritime Aquarium members. All passengers must be at least 42 inches tall.
