Kaitlyn D. Doorhy of Mattituck, N.Y., was 20. She died at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, where she was reported in critical condition after the accident.
She was hit while crossing Madison Avenue in Bridgeport on Friday. The driver of the vehicle, an unidentified male, remained at the scene and said he didn't see the victim run out into the road.
"It is with a heavy heart that I share news ... that Kaitlyn Doorhy has passed away as a result of the injuries she sustained when she was struck by a motor vehicle," SHU President John J. Petillo said in a statement. On Friday night, "more than 700 people gathered in the quad, along with Kaitlyn’s parents, for a candlelight vigil—offering up love and prayers and coming together as our community always does, good times or bad."
Doorhy had aspired to be a lawyer and lived in her sorority on campus, near where the accident occurred.
She is survived by her parents, Joseph and Darla Doorhy; sister Carly A. Doorhy; and grandparents John and Joan Doorhy and Denis and Marilyn Nankervis.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes Inc., 13805 Main Road, Mattituck.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church opposite the funeral home. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cutchogue, N.Y.
Memorial donations may be made to the Kappa Delta Sorority at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.
At SHU, counseling services are available at the Wellness Center in HC-108 for students, faculty and staff. The college is planning a Memorial Mass for this week.
"I ask that you continue to pray for Kaitlyn and her family and that you take care of one another," Petillo said. "I know your love and support meant a great deal to the Doorhys and will continue to in the coming days and weeks."
