Norwalk Man Charged With Assaulting Girlfriend

NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk woman told police Sunday her boyfriend threatened her and her family with a gun and assaulted her, Norwalk Police Sgt. Lisa Cotto said. Police arrested Whitney Wilcox, 27, of 97 Richards Ave., who moved to Norwalk from California to be with his 28-year-old girlfriend. Wilcox was arrested Monday and held on $250,000 bond. Police say they found a gun in his home, and drugs in his car.

Cotto gave the following account:

The woman came to police headquarters with her parents Sunday to say she had been threatened. She said Wilcox had trashed their apartment and pulled a gun on her. He said he was going to her parents' house to kill them.

She had been in a long-distance relationship with Wilcox for more than a year before he moved here to be with her. They had gone to her parents' house in Stamford on New Year's Eve and when they returned to their apartment at 10 or 11 they had begun to fight because he thought her family had disrespected him, she said. He began throwing things around the condo. She tried to leave and he grabbed her by the throat and threw her down. He said he'd hurt her family.

She stayed in condo that night and tried to calm him down. The following day they talked about it and things seemed fine. But later he blew up, she said, grabbing her by the throat and throwing everything around. He went into the bedroom and came out with a gun. He said he'd go to her father's house with the gun. She tried to call 911, but he grabbed her cell phone and smashed it, making it inoperable.

She said he cocked the gun and then moved the hammer back, over and over.

On Jan. 4, she went to stay with her parents but didn't call the police because she didn't know what to do. On Jan. 8, he called, and threatened her and her family, so they came to headquarters.

Police applied for a warrant and advised the Stamford Police Department of the threats. On Monday, Norwalk officers went to Wilcox's home and happened to find him exiting his car to head inside. He surrendered without incident. Police searched his car because they were worried he had a gun. They found two black pills in a clear holder, which Wilcox said were vitamins, and a bag of marijuana in the center console. Elsewhere in the car police found a rock-like substance that tested positive for cocaine, a white glass smoking pipe, an NRA certificate that said he had completed a basic course on how to handle a pistol, a pamphlet about gun safety rules and the basics of pistol shooting, and a target with 30 holes in it, consistent with a small caliber firearm.

Wilcox said he had a pellet gun in his bedroom. Police found it – a pellet gun that looked like a 4-inch semi-automatic gun.

Wilcox was charged with possession of narcotics, assault third degree, unlawful restraint second degree and interference with a 911 call.
