A Stamford man who was released from the Norwalk Hospital Emergency Room late Monday took with him an FOB key and a cell phone belonging to a triage nurse, police said. He went on to break into vehicles, spit at a Norwalk Police officer, use a cigarette lighter to leave a burn mark on the Plexiglas inside a police cruiser and flood a jail cell, police reported.
Eric Karwosky, 30, of 47 Lockwood Ave. was charged with arson, interfering with an officer, criminal mischief, burglary third degree, assault on a police officer, fireman or emergency medical staff, threatening, refusing to be fingerprinted and larceny sixth degree. Bond was $100,000.
Hospital security personnel saw Karwosky enter a Jeep parked near the hospital, authorities said. When they approached he jumped out and ran away, taking a TomTom GPS with him, police said. He claimed it was his Jeep, but the key he had belonged to a different car. He also had band aids, rolls of medical tape and discharge paper, police say.
The problems began when Karwosky managed to get his handcuffed hands to the front of his body and open the door of the cruiser he had been put in. He was pushed back in. He spit at the window, at the officer's arm and all over the back of the car, and then, because he could use his hands, managed to get a cigarette lighter out of his pocket and burn the Plexiglas, police said. He also threatened the officer and used a lot of swear words as insults, officers said.
Once at police headquarters, he threw toilet paper at a surveillance camera and then stuffed a jail cell toilet full of paper, so the room flooded, police said. He was put in a different cell, where he masturbated in full view of the cameras, authorities said.
Karwosky was also arrested twice recently. He was accused of frightening a woman who was walking her dogs on April 2 by following her and saying "I want you." Police say he confessed to using PCP just before the incident. On March 9 police arrested Karwosky for misbehaving at Norwalk Hospital, where he locked himself in the psych ward. He was throwing items and disrupting patients, police say, and ripped an electric key reader from the wall, breaking it.
