'Irene' Retired From List of Hurricane Names

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. - Irene, who knocked out power to so many in Fairfield County homes last summer, won't bother anyone again - at least, not in hurricane form.

The name has been retired from the rotating list of names assigned to Atlantic hurricanes, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says. The name was retired "because of the fatalities and damage it caused in August 2011," the agency says.

It will be replaced by Irma.

The storm killed 41 people in the United States and eight others in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It caused about $15.8 billion in damage. Its biggest impact in Fairfield County was heavy rain and widespread power outages, some which lasted more than a week.
