Norwalk Police received numerous call Monday night about shots being fired in South Norwalk Monday night at about 11:30 p.m. Reports conflicted: witness said that the number of shots varied from six to 10.
One resident thought the shots resulted from an argument on the sidewalk near 173 South Main St.
Definitely somebody did something, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said, because we had calls from all over. But police didnt find shell casings, broken windows or a victim. No one has been reported injured.
Two plain clothes officers stopped in the area of 173 South Main Wednesday morning and did a quick look through. After they left, a resident told The Daily Norwalk that he had seen a black car pull up at about 11 p.m. and park in the area. Seven or eight people got out and were standing on the sidewalk. An argument began, and then everyone heard shots.
He had heard that police received 30 calls about the incident.
Police conducted an extensive search last night. They visited Roodner Court and Meadow Gardens looking for signs of an incident and for a white Altima with a loud muffler. Police stopped a car that matched the description, but there was no evidence to link it to a shooting.
Cotto said a man who had heard the shots looked out his window and saw a white car drive by with a loud muffler. He wasnt even near the incident, Cotto said. Another man who was standing in front of the Crespo Grocery, near 173 South Main St., said he had heard a car with a loud exhaust heading fast down Meadow Street, maybe a Nissan or a Toyota.
Cotto, who worked an overnight shift, heard the shots from the Rowayton train station. The night had been quiet and still, she said, and the sound carried.
An officer heard the shots from the police station, according to scanner traffic.
Some people who heard the shots guessed at the type of gun used. A man who lives on Possum Lane in Rowayton said it sounded like a 9 mm. Another witness thought it was a .40 caliber.
The Rowayton resident thought the sound came from South Norwalk, due to the echo. He said he heard six shots and then six more.
A witness in the area of 173 South Main told police he had heard about six shots and saw three men running fast. Police searched for the men and did not find them.
There are surveillance cameras at 169 South Main St. Police hope they provide useful information.
