People who use marijuana may be adding meaning to their Independence Day festivities this year cannabis will be decriminalized Friday, just in time for the July 4th weekend.
On Thursday, Gov. Dannel Malloy signed P.A. 11-71, S.B. 1014, An Act Concerning the Penalty for Certain Non-Violent Drug Offenses, according to a statement from the governor's office. The bill is effective July 1.
The law reduces the penalty for possessing less than a half-ounce of marijuana from a crime with a potential prison sentence to a $150 violation on the first offense. Second and subsequent offenses carry a fine of $200 to $500. Third-time offenders must enroll in a drug education program at their own expense.
