Governor Signs Bill Decriminalizing Pot

People who use marijuana may be adding meaning to their Independence Day festivities this year – cannabis will be decriminalized Friday, just in time for the July 4th weekend.

On Thursday, Gov. Dannel Malloy signed P.A. 11-71, S.B. 1014, An Act Concerning the Penalty for Certain Non-Violent Drug Offenses, according to a statement from the governor's office. The bill is effective July 1.

The law reduces the penalty for possessing less than a half-ounce of marijuana from a crime with a potential prison sentence to a $150 violation on the first offense. Second and subsequent offenses carry a fine of $200 to $500. Third-time offenders must enroll in a drug education program at their own expense.
