Registration Opens for SpinOdyssey in March

Registration is open for SpinOdyssey 2011, an indoor cycling fundraiser where participants can ride, Zumba, pump and/or play tennis in support of the American Cancer Society's breast cancer research and Norwalk Hospital's Whittingham Cancer Center. The event takes place Sunday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Intensity Fitness and Tennis Club, 490 Westport Ave., Norwalk.

"Each year, the SpinOdyssey planning committee seeks to expand its appeal to a larger number of fitness enthusiasts while raising the largest amount of funds for breast cancer research," said Westport resident Patty Kondub, the SpinOdyssey co-chair. "Thanks to the generosity and support of a number of local fitness professionals, the 2011 event will offer a greater variety of activities than ever before, including Spinning, Zumba, body pump, power training with noted instructor Herman Walker, and tennis."

Co-chair Terri Polley of Norwalk says, "SpinOdyssey unites people of all ages and fitness backgrounds in the common goal of making breast cancer a thing of the past. As a survivor and a long-time SpinOdyssey participant, I feel privileged to be part of the event, and to be part of the positive energy generated by those who take part."

Participants can register individually or as part of a team. Indoor cyclists can register to ride for two, four or six hours at Intensity Fitness. Intensity will also host a full schedule of "off the bike" activities, including: 9 to 11 a.m., Training with Herman, a combination of power groove and kickboxing; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Zumba; 1 to 3 p.m., Body Pump group strength training; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., tennis.

In addition to the Intensity events, SpinOdyssey 2011 will feature four one-hour Zumba sessions at Studio M Dance and Fitness Center at 112 Main St. in Norwalk. Zumba master class instructor Emm Koteka-Wiki will lead the sessions.

Now in its 12th year, SpinOdyssey has raised $2.5 million for breast cancer research and breast cancer patient and family support services. In 2010 alone, the event raised more than $400,000 for the cause and fully funded three breast cancer researchers.
