Party Raises $10K for Kenyan Schools

Nearly 100 people showed up for the 'Khristmas for Kenya' fundraising celebration at the Cannon Grange in Wilton. The event was to support the Vanessa Grant Trust, a nonprofit that works to improve schools in Kenya.

Weston residents Hermione Gluck and Mary Asphar organized the event and raised nearly $10,000 for the cause. "We were delighted by the incredible generosity of our friends, neighbors and some local businesses," Asphar said in an email.

Gluck's uncle, Hamish Grant, started the Vanessa Grant Trust in his late wife's memory. Grant owns a tea farm in Kenya, and his wife had worked toward improving the primary and special needs schools in the area.

The fundraiser included a 50/50 cash raffle, which was presented by Kathleen O'Connell and Diane Sather, both of Weston. James Fellowes, also of Weston, won but donated his winnings to the charity.

The Mill River Band rocked the house with their acoustic mix of Beatles, Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead. One band member, Michael Jacob of Westport, donated his evening's earnings to the Vanessa Grant Trust.

The Valencia Restaurant in Norwalk catered the event and gave the organizers a discount on the dishes. Events Party & Tent Rentals provided discounted supplies.
