Kids Build Support for CancerCare

Building things out of LEGO blocks is part of nearly everyone's childhood. But for Bobby Leonard and others participating in Blocks of Love on Nov. 20 at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, it's a way to help patients at Norwalk's CancerCare get the treatments they need.

"[Bobby] has always had a passion for LEGO bricks," said his mother, Jackie. "And to be able to use that to support such a worthwhile cause ties everything wonderfully together."

Darien native Bobby, a sixth-grader at New Canaan Country School, spent hours carefully crafting a Green Grocer model for the Blocks Of Love's competition. He called the 2,300-piece sculpture a "good challenge."

Kids from all over Fairfield County will build models, each asking for sponsorships to raise money for CancerCare. The creations will be on display at Blocks of Love, and at local businesses afterward, to raise awareness for CancerCare's programs. There will also be workstations where fairgoers can build their own designs, booths with the latest LEGO sets and "fill-a-bin" stations with used blocks.

CancerCare offers free professional support services to cancer patients as well as their family members and caregivers. Last year, it helped more than 3,000 people in Connecticut find counseling, support groups, education, financial assistance and practical help.

Spots are still available for kids to build and display creations before the event. CancerCare is also holding a Ton of Bricks drive, looking for donations of used LEGO bricks to supply the building stations and fill-a-bin booth. Connecticut Prudential Realty offices in Fairfield, Westport and Norwalk are collection sites.

"We are also looking for drop-off sites for donations and to host a completed LEGO project for display," CancerCare regional director Lisa Cannella said.

The big event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 20 at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. For more information on how to register or donate, visit CancerCare's website.
