NORWALK, Conn. -- There will be tours, Quran recitations, and information on programs at an open house at the Al-Madany Islamic Center of Norwalk Saturday, March 18.
“By the Grace of God, Norwalk’s Muslims now have a spiritual home,” says Abdelazzeim Mahmoud, the mosque’s imam or religious leader.
The public may drop by the center from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be kid-friendly arts and crafts activities including henna and Arabic calligraphy and refreshments.
“We hope our community will be an active participant in the civic and religious life of our city. Our doors are open to everyone," Mahmoud said.
Al Madany Islamic Center of Norwalk is a congregation of approximately 100 Muslim families living in Norwalk since the early 1970s. The Congregation is non-denominational and multi-ethnic.
While there have been Muslims in Norwalk since the 1970s, Al-Madany Islamic Center was officially established in 1999. Until last year, Norwalk’s Muslim community used rented spaces to worship.
Al-Madany purchased the Grace Episcopal Church in February 2015. Today, five daily prayers are held at Al-Madany and a well-attended Islamic school is held there on Sundays.
The Islamic Center is located at 1 Union Park S., Norwalk.
