Carver Students Wrap Up Tour

The Carver Center's annual college tour opened the eyes and expanded the horizons of the students who visited ten colleges in ten days. The young people learned about admission requirements and tuition costs. They discovered the role the colleges played in American history, especially those counted among the Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Today's entry is the tenth and last article written by our student-journalists. Andre St. Surin writes about the University of Tennessee.

Andre reports:

The trip to Tennessee State University was a good tour. When we got there, a former student of the University who is now a staff member in the Admissions Center, Everrett Jolley, gave a short presentation. Mr. Jolley told us all about how his family went to Tennessee State University for several generations and he was the 18th person in his family to graduate from the school.

Mr. Jolley told about the school and its requirements for admission. It was founded in 1912 by Dr. William Jasper Hale. The tuition is $26,000 per year and that includes room and board. We asked about graduation rate, boys to girls ratio, curfew, and the Black Sororities and fraternities known as the “divine nine.”

I felt that Mr. Jolley danced around the question of graduation rate by telling us that we should focus on ourselves and not others. He eventually informed us that their graduation rate was 47 percent which is very low compared to the other schools we visited. I think this is because of the school's reputation of being a “party school.”

After the presentation, Troy who is a sophomore, gave us a tour around the campus. He was a good person and he showed us wherethe best spots on the campus were. The whole walk was amazing. I really like the school. He told us that TSU was a party school but you don’t have to attend all the parties. He doesn’t. It was nice to have a well-rounded person guiding us around the campus.

This story brings our tour to an end. Thanks to everyone who supported the Carver Center and made it possible for me to be here. As a matter of fact, thank you to everybody who has ever given their support to Carver over the past 40 years.
