Have you fallen in any manholes lately? No? Good. Keep it up. This week is National Public Health Week and the theme is "Safety is No Accident Live Injury Free."
The National Public Health Association states on its website that it only takes a moment for an injury to occur, and that most injuries are preventable. Here are some common sense tips for preventing injuries.
Prevention begins at home.
* Assess rooms for poor lighting or uneven surfaces in order to prevent falls.
* Install and maintain smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
* Make sure all electrical outlets are inaccessible to children.
* Supervise children if they are near cooking surfaces, and never leave food unattended on the stove.
* Program emergency contact numbers -- including poison control -- into your phone.
* Store medicines and cleaning supplies in locked cabinets out of reach of children.
And it doesn't end at work.
* Follow all workplace safety regulations and guidelines.
* Use a company bulletin board, website or newsletter to communicate important workplace safety tips.
* Create an employee monitoring system that rewards individuals for reporting hazardous working conditions.
Be safe on and near the road.
*Always wear a seat belt on every trip, no matter how small.
*Do not phone, text, or eat while driving.
*Always walk facing traffic, and make yourself visible to vehicles when walking at night.
* Use crosswalks and avoid jaywalking.
