Volvo Makes a Move on Fancy

Volvo has long wanted to play in the proverbial sandbox with the fancy kids – the Mercedes, BMWs, Audis and Acuras – and now there is word they're taking off their shoes and jumping in.

The Volvo Concept You, debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is about showing off the future of Volvo luxury, which starts with a single touchscreen-controlled panel mounted in the center console. There is also a display on the windshield, as well as a customizable dash. And when the driver looks (gasp) toward the screen, infrared cameras register eye movement and wake the display from "sleep." Climate, audio and "info"-tainment controls are all accessible from this panel, which also includes Internet access for the passenger side of the front seats. Additionally, drivers can swipe data from the touchscreen to the windshield display, or can share it with rear passengers.

If that's not enough to entice you, other innovations include a new Alpine audio system that has a subwoofer weighing only three pounds, down from the standard 33.

It sure looks as if Volvo and the fancy kids will get along just fine.
