There's Still Time to Pick Your Own Blueberries

It might be August, but there are still blueberries to be picked, and lots of ‘em. Whether you like them in your yogurt smoothies or baked into your homemade pies, there’s no denying that picking your own are preferred. Luckily for all of us, there are plenty of farms nearby just bursting with berries for us to savor and share. Here are a few local havens for you blueberry picking enthusiasts.

Jones Family Farms – Located in Shelton, Conn., this farm offers an enviably bucolic scene, nestled in the hills on the northern edge of Fairfield County. Call Farmer Jones’ hotline at (203) 929-8425 for the latest pick-your-own details.

Indian Ladder Farm – Nestled in Altamont, New York, just outside Westchester County, Indian Ladder Farm offers as gorgeous a backdrop as you could ask for when picking your own anything. And this year, according to the farm’s Website, the blueberry crop is “outstanding,” the berries “fat and plentiful, slowly ripening in the afternoon sunshine.”

Aspetuck Land Trust – This hidden gem is tucked away in Easton, Conn. Dedicated to preserving open space in Easton, Weston, and Westport, Aspetuck Land Trust is an invaluable resource in Fairfield County. The trust offers 800 blueberry bushes, just ripe for the picking. But on-sight signs ask you to refrain from being a “blueberry pig” and limit your takeaway to two quarts.

Happy picking!
