Taking Fairfield Fashion Forward

Walking into Jennifer Butler’s downtown Fairfield atelier feels more like walking into a Manhattan Fashion District studio. Jennifer’s style is edgy and creative, a reflection of her vibrant personality. She’ll tailor make any piece for you, and she’ll try to get you to push the limits of your fashion comfort zone in the process.

“I’ll make any piece a person wants,” Jennifer says as she deftly guides a linen dress under her sewing machine’s needle. “But I’ll also ask ‘Why would you do this, when you can do this?’” This is Jennifer’s approach. There’s absolutely nothing “off-the-rack” about her designs.

When I ask about a tangerine micro-suede jacket, she holds it up for me. As I stand coveting, she tells me “There are only five of these. Period.” This is another aspect that makes Jennifer’s line so special. Each piece is like a limited edition print, and many are truly one-of-a-kind.

“It’s not how everyone does business, that’s for sure,” she says. “Opening a store and making each piece by hand. It’s kind of financially bananas. But I wouldn’t want to work any other way.”

She also wouldn’t want to work anywhere else. “I love being in Fairfield. In the last three-and-a-half years since I’ve been here, this whole area has completely changed. It’s like the SoHo of Fairfield, and there’s a real sense of community.”

Jennifer does her part to perpetuate this. She’s currently preparing for her sixth fashion show to benefit the Fairfield Theater Company.

“It’s great to be able to support the arts, since that’s what I’m about,” she says. “And especially to be able to support another local start-up.”
