Slew of Markets Pops up for The Season

This weekend signals the launch of a slew of local farmers market openings. As reported here in the last few weeks, markets in Westport and Norwalk are already in full swing and now that June has arrived, the rest of the county is following suit. For fresh food lovers, here's a quick guide to help you seek out the greenest asparagus, the fattest artichokes, and the sharpest spring onions for your favorite recipes.

Rowayton residents continue their long tradition of Friday markets today, June 4, from Noon to 5:00 p.m. at a new location at Pinkney Park, 177 Rowayton Avenue. With sweeping views of the 5-mile River and Long Island Sound, the goal of the market is to create an inviting experience complete with demonstrations, entertainment, and picnicking. The season is expected to run until the end of October. Public parking is available in the Ambler Municipal Lot at 140 Rowayton Avenue.  Over twenty vendors are expected.

Fairfield's got two markets to choose from, one for early birds and the other for those who prefer to sleep in. From 9:00 a.m. to Noon, head to the Promenade at the Brick Walk downtown. If you miss the morning market, the second takes place at 75 Hillside Road in Greenfield Hill from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. Passionate produce seekers may want to hit both as each boasts different vendors and the afternoon location offers music by folk guitarist Bern McWain.

You'll have to wait another week for the Weston Farmers Market, which opens June 12 at 104 Weston Road. Now in its twenty second year, the morning market is held from 9:00 a.m. to Noon and features a weekly activity for children. Look for the live baby chickens on opening day, a fire truck, arts and crafts and more in the ensuing weeks.

It's well worth the drive to check out the offerings in your neighboring towns' markets. Each offers a unique roster of vendors.
