Showroom Hosts Custom Upholstery Event

When you spend as much time sewing as Sally Seward did when she was a kid, chances are you’ll end up working in a related field as a grownup. While Sally was studying at the New York School of Interior Design she snagged a coveted internship with Scalamandré, the luxury fabric house favored by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and William Randolph Hearst. Upon graduating, she was hired to work for the company full time in the Washington, D.C. showroom.

Sally’s sewing skills were soon resurrected and she was put to work creating draperies and table skirts for the showroom – she even ended up sewing all the curtains for the Syrian Embassy in Washington, as well as for the ambassador’s residence.  “Window treatments were taking over my life,” she said. She decided it was time for a change. While working as a sales representative for several textile companies, she met her husband, Drew Kirby, and they moved to New York.

These days, Sally is on the working mom treadmill, juggling three kids (Jack is 12 and twins, Emily and William, are 9) and her own trade showroom, tucked away on a side street in the center of Darien. Make that on Center Street in Darien. “I represent several different furniture manufacturers, textiles, wallpapers and drapery hardware,” she said. Sally works with interior designers and decorators, local drapery workrooms and retail stores. “Designers are often too busy to go into the Designers and Decorators Building in New York, so they come to me,” she adds.

For the whole of October, Sally is running a pop-up Showroom event for Charles Stewart furniture.  “This company has an amazing five-day, quick-ship program on their most popular pieces – they guarantee they will custom make your upholstered piece in five days from receipt of the fabric and any trim,” she explains. “With this program, people can be sure of getting their new furniture delivered before the holidays.”

Talking of holidays, how does Sally Seward, business owner and busy mom, find time for herself? “It’s not easy,” she said laughing. “I just went away for a long weekend with my girlfriends to the Jersey Shore. That’s about all I can manage!”
