If you're sending your first-born off to college here's some advice. Whatever your kid might think, she doesn't need everything on that "must-have" dorm room list. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as move-in day approaches.
Turning that freshman dorm into a cozy home can be a challenge. Colorful tapestries and posters can help disguise cinderblock walls. Just make sure you check the dorm rules before sticking things up.
Buy brightly-colored sheets and a cheerful comforter. You'll need extra-long twin. Since the bed often doubles as a coffee table or couch, pick a color that won't show the dirt. And try to coordinate color scheme with the roommate.
Curtains and a couple of decorative pillows will make the room feel "decorated."
A set of bed risers to lift the bed a few extra inches will earn precious storage space under the bed.
Stackable plastic crates are a good way to organize small closets.
Don't buy a giant laundry hamper. There's no room to store it, so opt instead for a collapsible one with wheels.
Before you buy a refrigerator, microwave or rug, talk to the roommate. No point duplicating these big items.
If your kid's college is too far to drive, shop when you get there. Or ship everything via UPS or FedEx. FedEx will ship duffels and other odd-sized items.
