Kimberly Dulka loads up her truck every Tuesday and Friday morning with only the freshest and best-looking vegetables from her farm. There are crates of peaches and plums, picked the day before. A selection of fruit pies baked at the crack of dawn, using fruit harvested from the farm, is stowed carefully into the truck bed. A box filled with jars of the farm's own honey is the last thing to go in, along with folding tables, tents, scales and the cash box.
Within an hour, Kim is all set up in a lovely spot in Cos Cob, next to the Greenwich Historical Society and overlooking the boats on the river. A steady stream of customers, some regulars and many new, come to check out what she has for sale that day. Neesha Rahim of Old Greenwich was there with her sons Shyam, 6, and Faiz, 4. "This is my first time coming to this market. There's a good selection and everything is organic and grown locally," she said.
Rose Pasciolla, who lives one block away, was baby-sitting her grandsons, Sal LoBalbo, 9, and Vincent LoBalbo, 6, of Stamford. "I came last week for the first time," she said. "Everything is very fresh here," she added, before taking the boys to look at the pears and apricots growing in the Historical Society grounds.
Farmers' Markets are excellent sources of fresh, locally grown produce. The selection will change weekly depending on the weather and what is ripe for picking. The Cos Cob Farmers' Market is held Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 12 to 6:00 p.m., and is located at 39 Strickland Road in Cos Cob.
Kimberly is the great granddaughter of the founder of Red Clover Farms. Today she runs the organic farm operation with the help of family and any friends who want to lend a hand.
