Kazu Does Japanese Right

Everyone needs a go-to sushi restaurant, a place that’s not too pricey and still offers the freshest fish. Kazu definitely delivers. This hip but cozy Japanese gem serves up some of the finest sushi in the county, along with other delicious Japanese dishes.

But let’s start with the sushi. The Tuna Tataki is a must. Thin slices of barely seared tuna practically melt against a whipped, slightly spicy lime sauce. The sauce is mellower than the standard wasabi-soy mix, but it still brings some of that wasabi kick.

The list of House Rolls at Kazu is as long as a baby dragon’s tail. The Dragonfly roll, with spicy tuna, cucumber and avocado and topped with wasabi tobiko, is a standout. The coolness of the cucumber and avocado balance the heat of the wasabi, and together, they wrap themselves around the buttery-soft tuna.

If sushi’s not your thing, Kazu still has plenty to offer. The Negimaki, a grilled rib-eye and scallion roll in a teriyaki glaze, is always a crowd pleaser -- the savory rib-eye blending beautifully with the slightly sweet scallion and teriyaki. New York strip steak, chicken teriyaki and udon soup are other sushi alternatives.

Whether it’s a working lunch or a casual dinner, Kazu is the perfect backdrop, the place you know you’ll get great sushi and service. And in October, you can even catch a post-season baseball game at the bar. Pair the game with the roll of your choice and a frothy Sapporo beer and you’re talking my kind of sports bar.

So grab your chopsticks and head over to Kazu, in the heart of SoNo, at 64 North Main Street
