Kaia Yoga Positions Itself in Westport

Kaia Yoga, an state of the art full-spectrum yoga and wellness studio, opened last week in Westport. In its final phases of construction and at almost 10,000 square feet of space, it will be among the largest yoga studios on the east coast.

Owners Stan Woodman and Gina Norman named the studio after their three-year-old daughter Kaia (derived from Greek, meaning “pure”). They are devoted yogis who have both practiced and taught yoga throughout the world. “Once you begin to practice yoga and become more aware of your body, everything else starts to fall into place,” said Norman.

There are four yoga studios, two of which can be combined into a larger space to accommodate 90 students. The lower level studio is also a hot room that warms up to a muscle-melting 110 degrees. Another studio offers a suspended rope wall, where participants can bend and stretch without apparent heed for gravity. The room is the only one of its kind in Fairfield County.

But yoga isn’t the only item on the menu at Kaia, where finishing touches are being put on an organic café and juice bar. And to lessen the facility’s environmental footprint the countertops were made from recycled materials; the cups, lids and straws are made from corn and the spoons from potatoes.

The center also features calming water sculptures, artwork from local artists and full-service changing rooms with shower facilities. There will also be an on-site chiropractor, midwife, licensed family psychotherapist, massage therapy and a supervised playroom for children.

Upcoming events include a “108 Salutations to the Sun” fundraiser (for the benefit of the Give Yoga Foundation) and a sunset meditation cruise on the Long Island Sound. For the complete Kaia schedule, go to the website.
