How many times have you bemoaned the low aptitude of drivers with whom you share the road? The results of a recent national survey agree with your assessment. And then some.
According to GMAC insurance, nearly one in five drivers some 38 million Americans could not pass a written driving test if they took it today. The survey, conducted by GMAC's annual National Drivers Test, polled approximately 5,000 licensed drivers from 50 states, posing 20 questions culled from state Department of Motor Vehicles examinations.
The grades were shockingly low, as a high percentage of American drivers demonstrated woefully little understanding of the rules of the road. The national average score for the survey dropped slightly from 2009, from 76.6 percent to 76.2 percent.
If respondents answered less than 70 percent correctly, it was considered a failing score. But drivers aren't the only ones in danger. Pedestrians also have reason to cross the street warily after learning that 85 percent of those surveyed could not accurately identify the proper action to take when approaching a yellow light.
