Improve Your Image with the Help of an Expert

It’s Monday morning and you have a lunch date with an important client. You rifle through the items in your closet and are horrified when you realize you have nothing to wear. Cue the wardrobe-induced panic.

We’ve all been there. But help is available.

Image consultant and fashion guru Scarlett De Bease is like a paramedic for your fashion emergencies. A 20-year veteran of the fashion and beauty industries, De Bease’s resumé boasts plenty of boldface names. In addition to working with the Clarins, Revlon and Charles of the Ritz cosmetic lines, De Bease also served as a professional makeup artist for Diane von Furstenberg.

Her services run the gamut from personal makeovers to office staff consulting, and she has clients throughout Westchester and Fairfield Counties. Her goal is to help you present yourself in the best light for every occasion. She’ll analyze your body type and coloring to help you better identify the hues and styles that work best for you. She provides personal shopping services and will even help you “shop” your own closet.

She also offers some sage shopping advice for those of us who end up buying but not wearing items more often than we would care to admit.

“Just because the price is right, does not mean you’ll ever wear it,” De Bease advises. “If it isn’t right for you at full price, it won’t look better on you at 50 percent off.” I might just print this out and affix it to the front of my AmEx card. De Bease goes on to explain that you should “resist the urge to buy what you already have.” Translation: You don’t need another little black dress if you already have six others. Put the hanger back on the rack.

De Bease also has excellent advice for the trend savvy. “Don’t buy the ‘must have’ color, unless it looks good on you!” Coral is big this summer, but if you look better in cooler colors, you may just want to skip it.

Finally, we need to make peace with the fact that skinny jeans really aren’t right for everyone. De Bease says, “Never buy something too big or small. Only buy what fits now, as you can always shop again if and when you need another size.”

So, perhaps instead of shopping for the clothes that will fit when you finally lose those 10 pounds you’ve been working on shedding, wear what fits you now, and reward yourself with a killer pair of jeans or a sexy little black dress in your new size once you finally reach your goal. After all, a little incentive never hurt.
