Donate Blood in the Company of Sharks

NORWALK, Conn. There will be blood next week. And lots of it -- at least we hope so. Not only is it Discovery Channel's "Shark Week," but on Monday, Aug. 1, the American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive not far from the shark tank in The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

The drive takes place between 11:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. If you want to go to the Aquarium that day your blood is your ticket, as admission is free to blood donors on Monday. All donors will receive a ticket for a free IMAX movie at The Maritime Aquarium – a $6.50 value. Currently playing are "Born to Be Wild," "Dolphins" and "T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous."

"The American Red Cross has announced a critical need for blood donors this summer. You can celebrate Discovery Channel's 'Shark Week' by taking a bite out of the blood shortage," says Chris Loynd, the Aquarium's marketing director.

Those who are 17 years of age, meet weight and health requirements and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood.

If watching your own blood flow for a good cause doesn't hold your interest, you can watch sharks draw some of their own during "Shark Week," which begins July 31.

To schedule a donation appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS or go to the American Red Cross website for more details.Find more details about the Aquarium's sharks and other live animals, its "Dinosaur Summer" exhibit, IMAX movies and more at its website. Or call (203) 852-0700.
