Cool Days Inspire Gardeners Anew

If you thought the gardening season was over just because you put the comforter back on the bed, think again. These cool fall days are perfect for all sorts of satisfying gardening jobs. 

  * Fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs, bare root perennials and bulbs. Many of the nurseries have sales so take advantage and fill in the holes in your garden with new plants.

  * Make a plan of your garden and note the location and names of your perennials. You might not remember where anything is by next spring.

  * Buy your flowering bulbs and plan on planting them by the end of September.

  * Plant fall pansies and flowering cabbage and kale. They’ll add color to your fall garden.

  * Re-seed any bare patches in your lawn and cover with straw or hay. Water well.

  * Check your roses for black spot and remove any diseased leaves from the plant and the soil.

  * If your perennials look crowded, it's time to divide them.

  * Turn your compost pile. If some of your compost looks ready, remove it from the pile and use it when you plant your bulbs.
