Are you looking for a way to shave dollars off your electricity bill? Here are some tips to save energy and water when you tackle the laundry.
Only wash full loads. Your washer uses the same amount of electricity to wash a small or a large load.
If you simply have to run a half-empty washer, remember to adjust the water level. If you own a smart washer, select the auto-level option.
Wash clothes in cold water. Ninety percent of total energy used for laundry goes to heat the water. Newly formulated cold water detergents, such as Tide Coldwater or Allergen Wash, will get your clothes as clean as if you'd washed them in (expensive) hot water.
Buy a drying rack and air-dry your clothes. An added benefit is that when the heat comes on in your home, you'll be adding precious humidity to the air your family breathes.
If you must use the dryer, dont over dry. Dryer balls, available from Bed Bath & Beyond, help separate clumps of clothes which can speed up the process.
