Can the Package and Eat Fresh

Everyone wants to eat healthier -- but sugary, processed, fatty food is cheap and abundant, and sometimes it's hard to choose a healthful alternative. Here are three foods to avoid, along with some healthier choices.

~ Sugared drinks: Soda is not the only culprit in the profusion of sweetened beverages. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teas and fruit-flavored drinks -- even those sweetened with "natural cane sugar" -- are highly caloric. Water, cheap and abundant, is always the best choice.

~ Processed meats: Favorites, such as sausage, bacon and pre-packaged lunchmeats, are bloated with fat and sodium. Think ahead and cook some extra meat or chicken to use in sandwiches. Or, be creative and use grilled veggies as a base for sandwiches.

~ Chips and cookies: Even if the packages claim they're low in fat, they're still high in calories and sodium. Ditch the "doodles" and opt for fresh fruit or vegetables. Luckily, summer is here and the produce is fresh: patronize your town's farmers' markets and buy local when you can.
