Brighten up Gloomy Rooms

Good lighting makes a world of difference to how a room looks - and to how you feel. A poorly lit room can be gloomy, especially during long winter evenings.

Picking the right type of lighting and fixtures for a home is a challenge because there are so many options. Hiring a lighting or interior designer could help you avoid over- or under-lighting your home.

Home lighting falls into two basic categories: task and accent lighting.

Task lighting does what its name implies - lights up an area where you need to see what you're doing, such as kitchens, bathrooms, staircases and laundry rooms. The most common type of task lighting is a recessed can, which now comes in a variety of diameters.

Wall sconces are increasingly popular, especially in corridors, bathrooms, living rooms and dining rooms. They give a softer light that reflects off the wall. Sconces should be installed 66 inches from the center of the fixture to the floor.

Accent lighting is equally important because it creates atmosphere. Table and floor lamps come in many shapes, styles and colors. The right lamp with the perfect shade can be an attractive focal point in a room - and bring a dark corner back to light.
