August Garden Offers Too Much Choice

August is absolutely the best time of year when you have a vegetable garden. All the hard work earlier in the spring is paying off as your vegetables ripen.

My biggest problem these days is deciding what to pick for dinner. There are suddenly so many choices. Let me take you on a little trip through my garden as I pick the veggies we're going to have tonight.

I ruled out salad because we'd had one for lunch. I'd picked the salad greens - a mix of romaine, mesclun and mizuna - early in the morning, still sprinkled with dew. The tomatoes have gone wild, so some went into the salad, together with sliced radishes and sweet banana peppers.

This morning I noticed that the eggplant had flopped over, which meant that there was a big fruit waiting to be picked. I picked a couple of eggplant and staked up the plant. The purple runner beans have gone mad, so I picked the largest - I'll have to pick more tomorrow for the freezer. When you steam the beans they turn a beautiful dark green. I decided a few sweet carrots, lightly steamed, would taste just right with the beans. The Swiss chard is growing like crazy. I love chard but I'm saving it for the winter. Every couple of days I pick a bundle of leaves, steam and blanch them and pack them in the freezer.

Ah, the pleasures of backyard gardening! Can't beat it.

Are you growing your own food? I'd love to hear what you're growing in your garden.
