Busses safely carry 750 million passengers around the country every year. But in the aftermath of fatal bus-related accidents in New York, New Jersey and Arizona, the Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced a partnership with states to conduct surprise inspections at vacation destinations.
In 2009, FMCSA conducted more than 130,000 inspections around the country, actions that led to more than four percent of bus drivers and seven percent of buses being put out of service due to safety and hours-of-service violations.
FMCSA will also standardize testing and training of drivers in order to prevent testing fraud, and to teach new drivers how to handle the responsibility of transporting large numbers of passengers. Training sessions will consist of 80 hours of instruction, including 32 hours of behind-the-wheel experience.
