Achoo. Protect Yourself from the Flu

In addition to getting vaccinated, take – and encourage your child to take – everyday steps that can help prevent the spread of germs.

According for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between five and 20 percent of Americans catch the flu every year, and approximately 36,000 people die.

?*  Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Throw the used tissue in the trash immediately after use.

?*  It might seem obvious but it's worth remembering: try to stay away from people who are sick.

*  Families are notorious culprits in the spread of bacteria.

?*  Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

*  ?Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. This is the most efficient way to spread germs.

*  ?If someone in the household is sick, keep that person in a separate room, away from others in the household, if possible, until they are no longer contagious.

*  ?Wipe down surfaces such as toys, bedside tables and those in the bathroom and kitchen with a household disinfectant.

These tips help prevent the spread of flu, but vaccination is the best measure you can take to actually prevent it. Check with your health provider for information about flu vaccinations in your town. You can also click here to check your town's immunization schedule.
