The Wilton Go Green Festival returns for a second year on May 1, taking visitors a deeper shade of green. From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Wilton town green and surrounding locations swirl with exhibits, demonstrations, vendors, speakers and activities, all geared to expanding our understanding of how to create a lifestyle that doesn't harm the planet.
Stop by Wilton Library, next door to the green, to see its impressive, 20 foot diameter model Earth Balloon, an inflatable globe displaying a high-resolution satellite image. Every 15 minutes, visitors can enter the balloon and journey to the center of the earth.Outside, choose any of five different bike rides with distances from 2.5 miles to 44 miles led by the Sound Cyclists who'll share expert safety tips and riding how-tos.The new Chevy Volt, Motor Trend's 2011 Car of the Year, makes a big splash, its handlers eager to show off the car's distinction as one of the greenest on the market.
In the Library's childrens Courtyard, investigate ways local schools have created their own green challenges and meet author Jill Dunn, who'll read her book, "I Want to be Green! But What Does That Mean?" several times during the event.
Woodcock Nature Center imports some animal friends for the festival and Jim Lucey of Wilton High School and Dave Havens of New Canaan's St. Lukes School lead a guided Norwalk River tour across from Wilton High School at 3 p.m. Wading boots and nets are supplied. Experts give talks throughout the event on organic gardening, conservation, and a myriad of topics that can boost your environmental consciousness.
