Warhol Materials Shape Exhibit

Many of Andy Warhol's Polaroids, black-and-white photographs and screen tests are part of Housatonic Museum of Art's new exhibit, "In the company of..." The Warhol materials were given to the Museum by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts through the Warhol Photographic Legacy Project. Videos, photographs, paintings and drawings by contemporary artists that explore Warhol's favorite theme, social interaction, are also featured in the exhibit. These works depict social scenes with portraits, rendered moments, and reimagined meetups and, in their way, pay homage to Warhol's pioneering works. The exhibit's artists include: Jeremy Kost, Rashaad Newsome, Billy Sullivan, and Andy Warhol.

The Warhol Polaroids and black-and-white shots on view were used by Warhol to paint from, reference points for his well-known celebrity and patron portraits. The screen tests the museum received include footage of Lou Reed and Marcel Duchamp. Since his death in 1987, thousands of photographs and other materials in Andy Warhol's estate have been distributed by his foundation to not-for-profit art institutions around the country.

"In the company of ...." also includes an October 14 multi-media performance by artist Trisha Baga in "Madonna y El Nino."  In it, Baga interacts with computer images projected on a wall behind her.  "In the company of..." runs from September 9 through October 15. Museum hours are:  Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Thursday evenings until 7 p.m. Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Sunday, noon until 4 p.m. For more information, visit the Museum's website.
