Photographer Inspired by Eugene Atget

"Reflections of Paris," at Westport's Nylen Gallery at Picture This, are Mallorie Ostrowitz's photographs paying homage to iconic French photographer Eugene Atget.  “The work of Eugène Atget has made a profound impression on me," Ostrowitz says, "his singularity of purpose; his total devotion to his work; his unique style and the thoroughness with which he explored his city and its environs."  Her work also suggests the sense of loneliness in Atget's Paris shots and the grand, wide-open -- and lonely -- spaces he also documented.  "I have tried to photograph with this same starkness.  The images of statues and mannequins are haunting symbols of people, isolated and detached from other humans," she points out. Ostrowitz took her photographs with a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark digital camera and printed them on an Epson 3800 ink jet printer.Mallorie Ostrowitz's work has been shown extensively throughout the United States. Originally trained as a  painter, she holds a BA in Fine Arts from Queens College, CUNY and a MFA in painting from CUNY's Herbert Lehman College.  Currently, she teaches photography, digital workshops and travel workshops  around the country. She lives in Glastonbury.
