Outside, it's snowy and blowy but inside Feb. 4-19, at Curtain Call's Kweskin Theatre, you'll warm up quickly. And the gales you hear? Nope, not wind. Those are howls of laughter at the onstage antics in "Noises Off," the hilarious play within a play about a fifth-rate English theatre company and the mayhem that ensues when the actors try to launch their play, "Nothing On."English playwright Michael Frayn adapted "Noises Off" from a one act play, "Exits," he'd written in 1977 but which didn't have much success. When "Noises Off" opened in 1982 on the London stage, however, his longer, re-working was an immediate smash and quickly moved across the pond to Broadway, in 1983. With its surefire cast of comic actors that included Dorothy Loudon, Victor Garber and Brian, Murray "Noises Off" won a Drama Desk Award for best ensemble.
And as stage comedies go, it's very high up the humor scale. In a 2002 review of a Broadway revival of "Noises Off," NY Times critic Ben Brantley called it "Michael Frayn's peerless backstage farce," and added, "There are moments when everyone -- onstage and in the audience -- seems to be riding the same runaway roller coaster."
